Johar's direction lacks aim and focus while his script seriously lacks consistency. The last hour is so laughable because of the sheer awfulness in execution, acting and writing. Sexy Sam is quite a pathetic caricature blend of a sleazy Casanova-type old hag (who only seems to sleep with white girls that are about 40 years younger than him) and the loving father who's there for his son and whatever. Then there's Maya, who is also a strong character and yet she lets herself be treated so harshly by Dev.

Rhea is supposed to be a strong woman who loves her job and family and while her quality time with family is limited, her excuse to Dev is that she's 'forced' to be the 'man' of the family? This is not the kind of thing one would hear a strong independent woman say.

Much of the dialogues are the kind you would hear in soap operas. Many of the comedic sequences, especially the silly ones like 'black beast' (racist?) were cringe inducing.

Like an Expensive Melodramatic Indian Soap Opera In New York Karan Johar attempts to make a 'so-called mature' movie but the handling of the themes and the storytelling is very amateur.

And, audiences expect far more with this cast than 'not a bad film'. Not a bad film.but one that could have had some great things to say about life and marriage but instead is just confusing in its message. It also has a few funny moments.but often you wonder if the humor is out of place in such a drama. It sometimes has good points to make about marriage.and other times it seems to drop the ball. Overall, this is an incredibly uneven film. I just found myself not caring very much as they all helped to create awful marriages.and affairs or divorces won't solve this problem. It also makes it uncomfortable rooting for the relationships. As you watch the film, you can't help but think all four of the main characters are at fault for their marriages and going from one marriage to an affair doesn't solve the basic problem that they're all very screwed up. Later, Maya and Dev meet again.and they soon begin spending time miserating about their respective bad marriages. Maya's husband, Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan) isn't a terrible person.but he's very immature and childish.and Maya soon becomes disenchanted with him and the marriage. Because the marriage is a cold mess, when Dev meets Maya (Mukerji) on her wedding day, he mostly talks about how marriage is awful.and eventually this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. His wife, Riya (Zinta) is a workaholic who makes great money and runs a major fashion magazine.but is cold and distant.

Dev (Khan) is a cynical pro ex-footballer whose career was ended when he was run over by a car. So, when it comes to examining two failing marriages, the audience is left confused.and are left wondering if they should even care. Others are NOT consistently written, such as SRK.who in some ways is a sad, likable guy.but he's also often an abrasive jerk.especially when it comes to his poor son. Some characters seem like they are in the wrong film (such as Amitabh Bachchan who mostly plays comic relief) as they just don't fit with the theme. The main problem is that the film is trying to be very adult and make some excellent points about marriage.but the writing simply isn't great but more inconsistent. So why does it only have a paltry 6.1 score on IMDB? After seeing the film, I think I can understand the film's underwhelming overall score as well as the many lukewarm or negative reviews. So, it's obvious the producers spared no expense in making the film. It was also filmed in the New York City area.
